Minority ReportMinority Report (2002)

IMDB rating: 7.70

Plot: In the year 2054 A.D. crime is virtually eliminated from Washington D.C. thanks to an elite law enforcing squad “Precrime”. They use three genetically altered humans (called “Pre-Cogs”) with special powers to see into the future and predict crimes beforehand. John Anderton (Tom Cruise) heads Precrime and believes the system’s flawlessness steadfastly. However one day the Pre-Cogs predict that Anderton will commit a murder himself in the next 36 hours. Worse, Anderton doesn’t even know the victim. He decides to get to the mystery’s core by finding out the ‘minority report’ which means the prediction of the female Pre-Cog Agatha (Samantha Morton) that “might” tell a different story and prove Anderton innocent.

Am I becoming racist?
I grew up in a suburb, always taught tolerance and not to judge people based on their skin color, I swallowed it well and believed it. Being a suburban area, there were very few black people at my school (probably less than 10) and the ones that I knew I liked a lot and always got along with them. I thought racism was the stupidest thing ever, these people were exactly like me and everyone else at my school except for the color of their skin!

Fast forward a few years, now I’m living in a large city. When I’m in an area heavily populated with blacks, I get nervous. When I’m watching the TV and see reports of a crime, I assume that it was probably a minority. I see statistics about crime rates based on race and I’m not surprised to see higher rates among minorities, when just a few years ago I would have been. I hear conversations between black people, and when I hear them using slang or poor grammar instead of thinking "wow they sound uneducated" my mind drifts to "wow, you rarely hear this sort of thing from white people".

I still keep in contact with my black friends from high school, I still like and respect most of the black people I meet, but despite this I still have the same feelings and behaviors that I described in the previous paragraph. What is going on here? Am I really becoming a racist somehow?

If you can’t be bothered to read everything I’m about to say: No, you’re not racist, you’re being reasonable, it’s unfair but it only takes one rotten apple to ruin the pie.

The word "racist" is tossed around more than people’s dicks these days and it really bugs me. This isn’t a knock at you mate, but what I mean is that the word has become so overused, everybody has become so anal over being "not racist" that the word’s pretty much lost all meaning.

You make a racially orientated joke, you’re a racist. You say "that chinese dude", you’re racist. You in any way acknowledge that people from different races have SLIGHT DIFFERENCES (such as skin colour) and some wanker will tell you you’re a racist!

You’re not racist. It’s a survival mechanism. It’s evolution. If we hadn’t developed the ability to build up a database of threats and dangers in our minds, we wouldn’t be here. We’d all have kicked a pitbull in the nuts at the age of 4 and snuffed it earlier on in life.

The truth is, the majority of street stabbings and shootings that we HEAR ABOUT in the news involve black people, as far as I can tell. Maybe the media is racist? Who knows, but the pictures we start building up in our heads, while unfair, aren’t evil, and seem pretty logical. It’s all about profiling. If I see a black dude dressed in a pair of jeans and a casual shirt, just walking down the road, in my direction, I wouldn’t give it two thoughts. Just the average guy. Turn the corner and you see a group of 10 black people dressed in hoodies with sagging tracksuit bottoms and heavy jewellery… Yeah, that’s intimidating, and instinct tells us not to piss them off.

"Bah, screw you instinct, you’re racist! Tell you what, I’m going to bump right into them, really hard, and come out of it alive and not be racist."

To be honest, I’m not surprised that the majority of street criminals we hear about are black. Know why? Well for one thing sensationalising things like this really helps news sell. How else do you think the search for Madeleine McAnn managed to stay on the front page of The Sun for 5 years? Secondly, look at the movies people are exposed to. Listen to the songs. Find me ONE good rap song that doesn’t involve shooting? I mean the most famous black rapper I can think of is Tupac, and that dude spent time in prison and had a history of gang life. Same goes for 50 Cent. These guys are supposed to be our ROLE MODELS. Instead they’re preaching crime to the youth of today, and instilling fear in the minds of everyone else.

it’s just the way it is.
ShortShitBitch | Nov 02, 2009

It isn’t racist they probally would think that about us.
gg smith | Nov 02, 2009

I think you’re turning into a racist…
I think you’re turning into a racist…
I really think so!
Mike Tyson | Nov 02, 2009

No.
Cassi may | Nov 02, 2009

I am not sure you are serious… is this how you think an ‘educated person’ thinks? Wow.
jasmine | Nov 02, 2009

Your encountering the fact that every race has it’s share of stupid and smart people, there are lots of stupid white people.
Ryu Hayabusa | Nov 02, 2009

ha na ur not rascist. im like that. i think its funny when they talk like that because they think they’re the shit and they sound soooo kool! hahaha.
Caw-Di-caw | Nov 02, 2009

No, your just not used to city life. I see white people all the time who can’t talk for shit.
MattSox | Nov 02, 2009

Your not racist you just see the growing statics in this country and i don’t blame you they scare me to doesn’t mean your racist.
Doubled2483 | Nov 02, 2009

I don’t think you are becoming racist. You are clearly well educated and have a tolerance for people. I think that everyone tends to discriminate from time to time. For a short period I found that every time something annoying happened to me it was involving a hispanic person. I began to have the same thoughts you have. I’m sure that at some time or another everyone has had racist thoughts without actually being racist. No worries.
sunbeam98 | Nov 02, 2009

Ah, so you’re finding our that you’ve been lied to your whole life. "Racist" is a made up word. Do you avoid snakes? Does that make you prejudiced since you treat them alike, or is the danger enough to make you cautious?
End_Libtardation | Nov 02, 2009

No I am a white girl from Chillicothe Ohio and I dated a black guy and when we would go to Columbus Ohio–I was the most nervous person around–1 white girl and 25 black guys–talk about being nervous…Your fine…
Angel | Nov 02, 2009

It doesn’t seem like it.
I consider Racism, not treating the opposite color equally.
Or making jokes about them.
If you still have friends that are a different color, then your probably not racist.

it seems to me your actually the very opposite of racist.
a lot of people think black people are mean and commit a ton of crimes, and its not completely true.

Its ok to think that white people don’t get in trouble much.
its just your opinion.
your not insulting anybody.
Shellby | Nov 02, 2009

There are disgusting people in every race. I guess that you are more disgusted with poverty and everything that comes with it, than being a racist.
xxx yyy | Nov 02, 2009

Hmmmmmmmmmmm…..
Andrea Vanessa | Nov 02, 2009

Not at all.
You are just becoming more aware of the intellectual differences.
It can happen between white individuals as well.
Like in ghettos, jails etc.etc…
Aristo | Nov 02, 2009

There is nothing wrong with "becoming" a racist. Most of the time we become racist because of others behavior.
silvertatt | Nov 02, 2009

ur not racist
im black and i cant stand being around a certain type of black people because they think they have to act a certain way because they are black
Sgger | Nov 02, 2009

Racism is when you believe you are superior to another based on race. So I would say no, you are not racist. Perhaps you are beginning to develop behaviors of prejudice though. It seems like you are beginning to develop a fear, which generally leads to stereotype, then rejection and then you may end up at good ole racist road.
PeopleSickenMe | Nov 02, 2009

That is not a race issue. It is a lifestyle of specific individuals- many of whom share a skin color. There are stereotypes, and people who fit them as well.

Many of them are uneducated, but it not limited to certain races. There are whites, blacks, hispanics and every race imaginable that speaks poorly, commit crimes and have a general disregard for the way a person should behave.

Sadly, you are now being exposed to people who live their life that way. It’s not neccessarily racist since you understand that not all peopel of a particular skin color are like that. Sadly, those individuals seem to choose a different path- and it reflects on all people that look like them. It’s sad, but that’s reality.

Racism exists. It always has and always will. But it will continue to exist because of the actions of people who seem to propel it by creating those stereotypes and not making decisions to change it. Sadly, it’s those very people who scream about racism to TV cameras…
Meghan | Nov 02, 2009

I don’t think so but some people would be more than happy to tell you that you most definitely are.

Your just going through the normal stages of development (I went through the same exact thing as you as a child and felt the same way until…) as you mature.

Good for you for being so self aware.

Careful though, stay true to who you are ’cause, there’s a million people out there that will catch wind of your uncertainty in lots of areas like ie: your political affiliation, your religion, your views on money…etc…and they’ll work really hard to prove the way you "think" is wrong.

Just remain true to yourself and know
KNOW
That regardless of what they say or think…
YOU are a good person.
Kit | Nov 02, 2009

What you are feeling is a dislike for a specific subculture of the black race. The white race has similar subcultures that you probably dislike as well. A few examples might be white trash, hillbillies, yuppies, etc. All races have undesirable subcultures that even they dislike as a whole. I am sure that most black people dislike the same subculture you are talking about because it makes them look bad. If you let it, this can cause you to become racist but if you look at it logically, you will understand it and your fear will subside.
Lloyd G | Nov 02, 2009

You don’t hear about white people because the media doesn’t report on whites it looks better on screen to always show blacks committing crime even though they had a report out on crimes, white people do more crimes then blacks.
twix21 | Nov 02, 2009

Don’t worry, you aren’t turning into a racist.
It’s hard not to be at least a little predigest when you live in the city.
What you are doing is more stereotyping than anything. And while there are plenty of people who will cry about how wrong it is, the truth is that stereotypes do not appear out of thin air, they are based off reality. It’s not wrong of you to think that more crimes are committed by black than whites, because it’s true. That doesn’t make you racist, it makes you realistic. As long as you know that stereotypes are generalizations and don’t apply to everyone, as long as you base your friendships off of personality and not race, as long as you would or would not hire a black person based off of his credentials and not his skin color, then you are not a racist. Maybe a little predigest, but like I said, it’s understandable when you live in the city. And if you moved to a trailer park in Alabama you’d probably start having bad thoughts about white Americans. It’s just the way it is.
Nikki | Nov 02, 2009

we are all racist in our own way. we dont mean it but we can’t help it either.
Isn't she lovely! | Nov 02, 2009

no your not racist. Like you said you werent around a lot of black ppl while you were growing up so therefore you’re just not use to the slang and everything else.
asj614 | Nov 02, 2009

not racist but a little prejudice. the difference in language isnt ignorance its preference, i know a lot of people that speak that way can turn it on and off its just a cultural thing you wouldnt understand. and in my city i dont get nervous around minorities but instead around bad neighborhoods. and i have found it true that the stereotypical "trailer trash" white people and the sterotypical "ghetto thugs" have instilled the same fear in people because they do the same ignorant things. i just personally feel sad that when people think of me or see me they would think any of the things you mentioned because i am nothing like this. lol and keeping in touch with one black person doesnt mean you havent developed a prejudice. but racist?? i think a racist thinks of themself as superior and if you feel that ur better than these people (or think that this is just how most black people are) i would think the answer to ur question is yes. inner cities have higher crime from all races, there are just more minorities there so it reflects the ratio of society. it is interesting that you question this tho…

if telling the truth is being a racist ,, then yes ,, they do use horrible grammar they are dangerous they do commit more crime than other people ,, I think you are just waking up from your government induced brainwash and seeing what allot of other people see. ,, the real black man ,,not the idealized black that the media put’s in front of you…. they are not like us,,, we are separated by a universe of differences ,,,we can coinside with each other but we are very different people. no you are not really a racist in the sense that you hate them for their skin color,,,, but I think you are seeing how they are as a people and it disturbs you because you thought they were just like you only black that’s not true our differences go way deeper than being " skin deep " oh and I was raised around allot of racist people and I couldn’t understand why they were so against the black people but now I am older and I have had first hand experience with the blacks,,, mostly all bad ,,, not all,,, but mostly all and I came to the conclusion that I really didn’t want to associate with them unless I was forced into the situation ,, I started out being all for them,,, now I don’t know,,,, they seem to hate us no matter what we do and I have never did anything to them
colossus | Nov 02, 2009
